What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the change in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. These changes can, over generations lead to the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It explains how people with traits that are advantageous are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with disadvantageous ones. This variation in reproduction could, over time, lead to the development and emergence of new species.

The term “evolution” is derived from the Latin word”evolution” which means unrolling or revealing, but the concept itself has a myriad of meanings as it has taken form in the sciences and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather), believed that existing species changed into other species in a predetermined fashion. The term”transmutation” was coined by the Lamarck’s disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term “evolution” from Geoffroy’s student to describe the view that existing species evolve into different species in an orderly and predictable manner.

Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living things develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or the ability to produce offspring. In time, genetic variation can lead a population to develop new physical traits or biological functions. The change in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and is the primary driver behind evolutionary change. Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary and also special creation, and consider their views to be “theistic evolution.” This is sometimes known as “continuous creationism” or “evolution from created kinds.” In this theory, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. Then the evolutionary changes produce new species that are identical to the original species.

Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things during a single event, referred to as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the original species were all created at the same time and that they evolved gradually afterward. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis, and argue that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.

In general, the creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position and so do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, some academic institutions and scientists are more flexible and allow for the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curricula.

What is Creationism?

When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. Publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they will remove the mention of evolution in their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this campaign. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, the Archeopteryx. Its sights are now set on removing excerpts from Darwin’s notorious finch research and on human evolution as well.

STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families and individual members. The goal, according to STR, is to rid the world of what it calls “atheist materialism” which portrays an image of students as being negative. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of students in biology revealed that half of them did not believe evolution. The reasons aren’t certain, but could be related to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR achieved many things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences, with a creationist viewpoint, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.

On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from the world, including ICR’s John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR and its members have been giving lectures on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
